NoLie Wi-Fi for Android. In testing.

Your Wi-Fi is bad in one room. Here's why.

Stand in the bad room with your phone. The app listens for eight seconds and tells you whether it's the walls, where the router sits, or the neighbours on your channel. Then what to do about it. Sometimes that's nothing.

The room list. Every room you've checked, best to worst. The garden office has a problem.

How it works

Walk in. Wait eight seconds. Read the answer.

  1. Walk into the room.

Take your phone to the room that's giving you grief. Stand where you'd normally sit. Name the room.

  2. We listen for eight seconds.

The app reads the signal where you're standing, which band you're on, and how many neighbours are on your channel. All of that happens on the phone.

  3. You get an honest verdict.

A status word, one plain sentence on what the room can and can't do, and the reason. Add another room and it ranks them.

What it actually tells you

Sentences. Not a score.

No bars. No number out of a hundred. It says what it found, in words you'd use yourself. Four of its lines, word for word.

  • “Your router is on the floor, behind a brick wall, two rooms away.”

  • “You're sharing channel 6 with eleven neighbours.”

  • “Your 5GHz channel is fine. That part isn't your problem.”

  • “Plug-in boosters are usually a waste of money.”

What it won't do

Three limits.

  1. Change your router settings.

Channels live in the router's own settings page, not in an app. It tells you what to change and walks you through where to find it. You do the tapping.

  2. Sell you hardware.

No shop, no booster links, and nobody pays us to recommend a box. If the honest fix is a second box at the far end of the house, it says so, and you buy one from whoever you like.

  3. Invent a problem.

If every room is fine, the biggest problem reads "There isn't one." The advice reads "Nothing. Leave it alone."
